Assignment 2: Completing a Production for a Client

Target Audience:

The target audience for this project is going to be the young generation, for that we tried to add some more excitement and horror to the film. It has fantasy as well and in editing I tried to use as much light and sound as possible to get to my aim.

Here is the short film ‘The Glimpse” I have edited.

The Glimpse – short film

In this project we were supposed to make a short film for our client Chris Fretwell in a sci-fi genre with the theme of “The Ghost in the Machine”.

Plan and Production Schedule and the Roles of the project:

We worked in a group of 4 colleague; we first discussed on the idea of the story to compromise the commissioned theme “The Ghost in the Machine” on a Sci-Fi genre as we wanted to make the client requirements come to the film.

In order to improve a Sci- Fi genre we decided to work on an original idea of 24 hours time travel as a futuristic feature of the genre and tried to apply the theme into the idea as creative as possible. We started to write the script of the project as it is expected based on Gilbert Ryle’s description of the theme ” where mental activity carries on in parallel to physical action”. For that the character experiences a 24 hour time travel to the future, he can gets benefit of seeing future in order to improve his current life situation.

We started with a blank page and worked for a couple of weeks on the script, storyboard, shooting and editing and ended up with a very satisfying short. My colleague Volkan had the first idea of the script; a boy finds a watch and from the time he puts it on everything is going to happen in different way. After the first review of the script we improved it a couple of times in a way which complies to the requirements of the client. After the final script was finished, we discussed on the props we needed, the location to be shot, the roles and planned a time table for the days to take the footages. We also chose the name of our short, “The Glimse”.

David was chosen as the director of the film, for the actors, Volkan and David were the best options, Isaac was responsible for the camera and I was the camera assistant, the photographer and the Editor of the film.

Storyboard of the project:

After a final decision on the script, we sat to talk about different shots in order to make the storyboard, then Isaac draw the storyboard, here is some examples of them.

Before we started shooting, we had some practice on the shots in the studio; it helped us to have a better view of the story, shots and every single responsibility to be taken in the shot days.

We spot the location in a few train stations, we managed to take shots in the least busy hours to prevent any inconvenience may cause to the public. We agreed to do the shooting on final Tuesday to Thursday before Christmas holiday.

For shooting stabbing scene we had to ignore using the real knife as it wasn’t suitable to use it in public, we decided to take quick and short scenes for them.

Here is a few pictures of days of shooting.

Health and Safety Requirements:

We were supposed to be very careful about the equipments as very high priced items and we also used a light rain drizzle to protect them.

As most of our recording was next to the train station we were aware enough about not putting ourselves and other passengers in danger of any probable accident.

Evaluation:

I can tell it was the most enjoyable project I ever had in this course, it helped me to learn a lot of things, skills and expressions about film making, what different kind of shots are, locations, camera etc. I really enjoyed working with David, I believe he can be a good Director as he has the talent ,if he wishes. It was a definitely good practice on editing for me, I found it amazing, although it isn’t professional at all, I love it so much as my first full film editing. For the last 1 minute of the film I will like to change the sound effect as I’m not that happy with that, but for that I need to learn more about sound and editing.

We presented our film to our client Chris Fretwell and here is his evaluation of the film.
